Noonan on the Bush White House

Too Bad
President Bush has torn the conservative coalition asunder.
...The White House doesn't need its traditional supporters anymore, because its problems are way beyond being solved by the base. And the people in the administration don't even much like the base. Desperate straits have left them liberated, and they are acting out their disdain. Leading Democrats often think their base is slightly mad but at least their heart is in the right place. This White House thinks its base is stupid and that its heart is in the wrong place.
It's why the RNC has shut down the their donation solicitation call center. I imagine many calls like the one I got the other day:

RNC: "Hi, I'm RNC tele-solicitor number 64 and I'd like to ask you if you are concerned about the Democrat agenda to weaken national security?"

Me: "I'm not speaking to any Republican party hypocrites who dare to speak the words "national security"." Click.

I've never liked Bush and would never have voted for him had it not been for 9/11 and the obviously greater danger of a Gore or Kerry. Now, I don't think it even matters.

Al-Qaeda damaged us, but on the whole, it remains to be seen if it did so more than the President is trying to do.
